While Web-based streaming media enables many new applications, two drawbacks limit its usage: poor performance and high bandwidth consumption. Realizing the promise of streaming media hinges on making it perform acceptably. The large size of most streaming media files implies a need for a great deal of available network bandwidth between server and end user. Any network slow-downs, traffic congestion, or load spikes translate into jerky video motion, tiny screens, hollow voices, and skipping audio tracks. Important deployment and delivery challenges must be overcome before the full potential of streaming media can be realized. While broadband has opened the floodgates for ISPs to speed delivery and enhance the customer experience, adding upstream bandwidth to support it is expensive. CacheFlow content-smart technology helps ISPs optimize their investments by reducing the bandwidth required to deliver rich content to a large number of viewers.
